Do odd things happen in your old house, too?

Do odd things happen in your old house, too? Jenny and I have never really felt “alone” here in our home, though we’ve also not had a whole lot happen that we thought was out of the ordinary. Lately, though, we’ve had at least two incidents that seemed to be strange.

First, about a week ago, we were at that stage where we had pretty much used all of the silverware and our everyday plates, and the dishwasher was full and ready to be run. We were doing something for dinner that day, and out of habit opened the silverware drawer. It was, as we expected, empty–except for an smallish, antique silver fork that we’ve never seen before, located in the spot where we normally keep our forks. We know the drawer was empty since the day before. Where did this fork come from? Maybe it was lodged between the counter and cabinet frame and fell into the drawer. Yeah. That has to be it.

OK, fine. Silverware issue explained. Then last night happened. We were sitting here relaxing. Jenny was at the dining room table with her laptop working on some writing. I was in the living room working on some programming stuff for the next version of this website. We didn’t have any music on or anything. All of a sudden, our TomTom GPS turns itself on, and says that we need to take the next exit. Um. What? It was sitting on our CD cabinet, face-down, away from any windows or areas that would let it get a GPS signal, and definitely away from any physical operation that could cause it to turn on. I mean, the battery in the thing doesn’t last for more than several days of being unplugged. The last time I had used it was just about seven days prior, to the dot. I used it when coming back from the funeral home in Cleveland last Sunday, and had turned it off when I arrived home–which was just about the same time of day that it turned itself on last night. I picked it up and it told me that I was near home, on 366, then it said that it lost its GPS signal. Um. Odd.

That did it. Out came the holy water. Everything got a good blessing, including the cats, the GPS, the laptops, and the silverware drawer.

So there’s some oddness for you. Do you live in an old house? Do you have odd things that happen that are possible to explain, but don’t seem to make all that much sense? Let us know.

Jonathan does a lot of stuff. If you ask Jenny, maybe he does too much stuff.
