Our Old House Update #2: The Roof

Tonight I sat outside to watch the sunset and thought, “Did our cat get sprayed by Pepé Le Pew?”

No, our cat did NOT get sprayed by a skunk, thank goodness. However, someone in my neighborhood needs to start paying more for weed. Because the stuff that they smoked tonight is awful.

Last week, I almost blogged out how this one bona fide ice cream truck stops on our block, in front of our house even. About the memories of life as a kid. I never got around to that. Instead, I get to blog about memories of cheap cannabis in a college dorm.

The real update for this blog entry is that the contractor finished our roof! We have a new roof!

Roofs are a funny thing. Most of us only notice our roof when the roof is not working or is missing.  I would never say – unless in jest – “Let’s have people over so that we can try out the new roof.” However, without this roof work, I may have said, “Why is it raining on my bed?”

Enjoying our roof is like enjoying our furnace. I never fully realized how much our furnace means to us until it broke down once in February. Another great example is our hot water heater. I never fully appreciated our hot water heater until it, too, failed.

Jonathan will no doubt blog later, in great detail, actual useful information about our roof replacement. I watched him take a bunch of photos. I presume that he has a purpose for these photos.

Since this whole site started life as an “Old House” blog, I just wanted to share a link to a newspaper story that I found a few days ago about an Old House in Kansas called Sauer Castle. Everything that I know about this place comes from this article and from the Wikipedia entry for this house. I just joined a Facebook group about Sauer Castle; I might blog a little bit more about it as I learn more.
