Making Wood Stuff

I finally got to do some more woodworking this weekend. I got down to the shop in my parents’ basement on Saturday morning, and my Dad comes down to help. We had built a tape case for him to store his DV tapes back in March. He comes down and says that it is full, and boy, he really wishes that he had another. Well, it just so happened that I had been thinking of some improvements that we could make to the previous version of the case. In addition, I had some red oak that was looking for a project that required dividers, and I also had a new dovetail jig that was looking for some additional exercise (it helped me to build a box for chisel and plane storage over Easter). So, version 2.0 of the DV tape rack was born. The almost-final product (minus some decorative bits) completely reminded me of some racks that radio stations used to store audio carts (think of something that looks about the size of an eight-track tape–they were often used for playing commercials, PSAs, etc., though some stations used them for playing songs and other things, too). The slots in this case were obviously smaller (made to fit DV tapes, which are about 3″ x 2″ x 3/4″), but the look was remarkably similar. I decided to use dovetails for the box construction. My dad wanted to take some “action shots,” so here are a few of me cutting the dovetails, then measuring to route the slots for the shelves.

Jonathan does a lot of stuff. If you ask Jenny, maybe he does too much stuff.
