Good Discoveries

After dinner with the parents tonight, I wanted to check-out a few things in the room.  Some good discoveries were made in the process.  Yay!

  1. Good finish on the floors under the carpeting!  This might mean that we can avoid a full floor refinishing exercise as part of this room.  We’ll have to see how bad they are after all of the carpeting comes up, though.  We won’t know what the whole story is until the carpet is out.  I’m leaving the carpet there for now–it will be good for our collective backs and feet while we’re working in the room.  Oddly, the floor in this room is thinner wood than the dining room.  This is one of those points where one must wonder if the original floor was replaced, or if they used two different sizes of wood on purpose.  Hmm.
  2. Beautiful trim wood underneath a few coats of paint.  I had to buy an industrial heat gun for another project (think 224 pieces of 1/2″ long 1/8″ shrink tubing).  I decided to give it a quick try on the trim tonight, just to see what was under the paint over a larger area.  Holy cow!  This wood is beautiful.  Thanks to E.P. for the ideas on good heat guns for this sort of thing.  I did spend a little bit on some good stripping tools, and it looks like this is going to be money well spent.  There are some great deep grooves in the trim boards that have been filled and obscured with paint, and they look awesome when the paint is removed and dug out of the grooves.
  3. The paint looks like it is going to come off of this wood pretty easily.  All of it seems to come off in one scrape, which is good.  Getting the old finish off might be a bit of a challenge, but even that seems to be coming off pretty easily.

It has been a good day.
